While the aviation ministry has been quick to deny news reports of any plan to demerge Air India and Indian Airlines, there has been another subtle change in its functioning.

Till now, all announcements of the financial performance of the airline used to be made by its public relations department. This time around, it was the ministry that issued the press release — it helped that the performance was better than what it had been in the past.
