Top Indian ministers to visit Canada to boost biz ties
Press Trust of India / Toronto Sep 11, 2010, 17:30 IST

Three Indian ministers and top officials will visit Canada this month to boost economic ties between the two countries, which signed nuclear, mining and other deals during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Toronto in June this year.

Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel will be in Canada later this month to enhance business ties between India and Canada, Preeti Saran, Consul General of India, said yesterday.

She said the visits were part of the efforts of the two countries to triple their bilateral trade, from less than $5 billion now, within the next five years, and added that the two countries have identified civil nuclear energy, higher education, science and technology, innovation, clean technology and renewable energy as the thrust areas.

Saran said the visit of the Prime Minister here in June as part of the G-20 Summit has given "fresh impetus" and "content" to the bilateral relationship between India and Canada.

She said that during his visit, Shinde would hold substantial discussions with his counterpart and other Federal Ministers in Ottawa and address World Energy Congress in Montreal on September 15 and meet Canadian businesses in Toronto.

Over 200 top world leaders in the field of energy from 52 countries will address the main concerns that face the world's energy sector and review the world energy situation. Senior executives, energy ministers and world energy industry leaders will gather in Montreal from September 12 to 16.

Commerce Minister Anand Sharma would be leading eight- member business delegation, she said.

The Minister would address top Canadian businesses at a function organised by the Canada India Business Council (C-IBC) on September 23 in Toronto and go to Ottawa where he would hold significant discussion with Canadian Ministers and Businesses.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel would hold discussions with his counterpart and other top politicians and businesses on the matters of mutual interests, Saran said.

Earlier this month, Subodh Kant Sahai, union Minister for Food Processing visited Canada and held substantial discussions with top Canadian politicians and businesses.
