Rahul ticks off Sena, says India is for all Indians
BS Reporters / Patna/New Delhi Feb 03, 2010, 00:23 IST

The war of words between Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and the Shiv Sena over the issue of north Indian migrants in Mumbai intensified today. Gandhi maintained that India is for all Indians and that the National Security Guards (NSG) personnel who saved the lives of hundreds of Mumbaikars during the 26/11 terror attacks in 2008 were from all over the country, while Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray accused him of insulting Marathi policemen who were killed in the attacks.

“Frankly, I am not interested what Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray or Raj Thackeray (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief) has said. My point is that India is for all Indians. I am not ready to remain silent and stop the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh from going to Mumbai,” Gandhi said at a packed press conference today in Patna.

“Every part of India is for every Indian. Any Indian is free to move in any part of the country,” he pointed out.

Gandhi’s remarks came hours after Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray targeted him in the party mouthpiece Saamna.

In his editorial, Uddhav wrote that those comments insulted bravery of martyrs like Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte, Tukaram Omble, Vijay Salaskar and all brave Maharashtrian policemen. He wrote, “Where was Rahul Gandhi when Mumbai was attacked?”

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi said in Gaya that many of the NSG personnel, who fought to save Mumbai, were north Indians.

“So, it is wrong for the Thackerays to suggest that outsiders will not be accepted in the city,” said Gandhi.

Interestingly, no leader from the Congress’ Maharashtra unit, including Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, had anything to say either endorsing Gandhi’s comments or in support of north Indian migrants in the megapolis.

“I did not say this (about NSG commandos) with reference to Thackeray’s comment but to the people of Bihar. He said that they should be thrown out of Mumbai, but he did not say this during 26/11,” said Rahul. “If India has to move forward, then all have to be taken forward,” he added.

Both Uddhav Thackeray and his estranged cousin Raj have been campaigning against migrant labourers from UP and Bihar.

Meanwhile, actor Shah Rukh Khan, who is under attack from the Shiv Sena for his remarks on the non-inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the coming Indian Premier Leauge, said he was not apologetic for favouring the inclusion of Pakistani players and termed the activities of the party as “undemocratic”.

Rahul Gandhi has been imposed on the gullible public by his mother and his dumb party. He doesn't have a single achievement to date. He doesn't even think before speaking, so much so that students of Darbhanga university had to drive him out! If the migrants r suffering today, it is because of non-development of their states by Cong and its allies and spineless Cong govt of Maharashtra.

Amidst all this 'outsiders' debate no one ever questions why people need to migrate in the first place. Has anyone interviewed the local citizen who would obviously search for a job first in his own state. What angers me the most is politicians like Lalu and Mayawati go scot free when they are the real ones responsible for this mess. Why can't these states generate employment? Unless that is done expect more of this. And yes localites ,be it from any state, have the first right to employment.

Rahul Gandhi & his congress party is North Indian specifically- UP Bhaiyaa. What is the real contribution of his family to India. Zero. They rule the nation by getting votes from the most populous states of India. The UP Bhaiiyaas are cunning people who speak innocently. They are jealous & hate all other communities. They have no culture. The so called aryan dont even know the ways of Hinduism. After being in slavery for thousands of year under different rulers, they have just taken the rulers negative qualities. Marathis & other communities to stop this UP Bhaiiyaas. Let me tell you even the Biharis are better. It is lack of progress which has made them like this. If Bihar progress, these guys will have a sea change in their attitude. But the UP Bhaiiyaas- even if you give them GOLD paved street they will behave cheap. that is their culture. it runs in their blood/DNA. they only have color & Hindi is a gutter language. a leftover wastage of Urdu.

This is ridiculous response tarnishing Hindi, UP etc..The idea is to not generalise.. you cannot hold a grudge against any community/ sect etc.every community be it Marathi's, Gujarati's, UP Bhaiya's etc have their nuances...I may not agree with all of Congress policies and acts but the fact is that India is for Indians - all of them...each and every state, city everywhere in India belongs to all of us..this divisive politics will destroy our country..So Firehorse please avoid making such sweeping statements your views should not hurt someone else's sentiments...

India should be for all Indians. Politicians should see what is good for the country than what is good for them.

Somebody please educate me -- what's Shiv Sena good for? Have they done anything for the betterment of the country or the state? IMHO, they are stuck in 19th century.

Agree with you Firebrand. And even the name change was a detrimental and totally useless step. Detrimental, because it cost the state big money to change the name from Bombay to Mumbai, and useless because unofficially, the majority of people residing in Bombay still call it by its original name in oral conversations. Hardly anyone says "Mumbai". What a waste

puccaghati...well are you by any chance part of the armed forces?they never did and hopefully never will have a feeling of being a "North Indian" or a "South Indian" or any other kind of Indian except Indian... SS has actually done nothing truly for the betterment of the citizens of Mumbai (remember it is all citizens not just the Marathi Manoos). IF anything its the industrious nature of the people of Mumbai - Gujrati, Boharis, Parsis, marthis, north Indians that Mumbai is what it is..the only credit the SS can take is to change the name of Bombay to Mumbai...

You need an education which the Cruch hasn't provided you ! Without the SS Mumbai would have been a cross between Egmore Station and Azamgarh . If you want to know its consequnces just look at the DRDO and North Indian Army ! They can neither invent nor fight , just collect pension and curry favour with the Press .
